On May 26, 2025, National Sorry Day, Marrin Weejali honoured the strength, resilience and healing journey of the Stolen Generations and their families with a powerful gathering. Hosted in collaboration with Deerubin Local Aboriginal Land Council and with support from The Healing Foundation, we welcomed more than 150 people throughout the successful event.
Guests enjoyed cultural workshops like basket weaving and possum skin art. A traditional Aboriginal healer shared their knowledge and practices, and renowned Aboriginal chef Mark Olive treated us to a delicious bush tucker BBQ lunch. The following statement was read on the day.
This day is a solemn reminder that past policies that forcibly removed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from our families, communities and cultures has an intergenerational impact that continues to this day.
At Marrin Weejali, we honour the courage of those who have fought tirelessly for recognition, justice and healing. Our work in social and emotional wellbeing, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and community support is grounded in the understanding that trauma and loss require culturally safe spaces for connection, healing and empowerment.
Today, we stand with our community in truth-telling, reflection and remembrance. We acknowledge that healing is a collective journey, one that requires action, compassion and unwavering support.
We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for culturally appropriate rehabilitation and ensuring that those affected receive the care, respect and opportunities they deserve.
As we move forward, let us listen, learn and walk together in solidarity. We invite everyone to take time today to honour the voices, stories and lived experiences of the Stolen Generations. Through truth and reconciliation, we pave the way for a future built on justice, healing and genuine change.
Marrin Weejali extends our deepest gratitude to everyone who joined us for this significant gathering. Your presence has honoured the spirit of healing, truth-telling and reconciliation.
We sincerely thank The Healing Foundation and Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council for partnering with us in making this day possible. Your unwavering support strengthens the path forward.
A special acknowledgment to the talented cultural artists and knowledge-holders who shared their gifts today, the chef, healer, weaver, singer and possum skin carver. Your contributions have enriched this experience for all.
Most importantly, we acknowledge and honour Aboriginal people here today who have been directly or indirectly affected by the Stolen Generations. Your strength, resilience and stories are at the heart of our collective journey toward truth, healing and justice.
Finally, our heartfelt appreciation goes to Marrin Weejali’s Women’s Group, whose generosity and dedication ensured the day’s success. Your willingness to give your time and energy embodies the true spirit of community and care.
Together, we continue the journey of healing.
